What is with all the ridiculous questions in the Hockey section?

For every one hockey question, there has to be at least a dozen useless question that have nothing to do with hockey. Doesn't Y/A monitor this stuff?|||I can see what you mean about useless non hockey related questions being in the hockey section. I came across five and climbing, of them in the past few minutes. Like this one Solve for x: abs(3x+5) - abs(2x-1) %26lt; 5?, u may use graphing. Or this one Heal Through Holy Quran ( Heal your body, mind %26amp; spirit ) Get solutions to your problems through holy Quran.? Or this one Should mobile phones be allowed to students in schools %26amp; colleges?Or this one Why aged people in our country are not being cared %26amp; respected by immediate family.? And this one CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO COPY %26amp; PASTE BANNERS? And yet another one More Info about Engr. Andrew Murfin, %26amp; Donald Clinton, two diff.names, diff. offers abroad, are they scam? Here is yet another four of these questions Where the nice %26amp; good places in paris? and How clear my gd round in air india airlines for cabin crew %26amp; suggest me sm expected topics?? pls suggest me some tips and gd topic. and Popup id='ytoolbar_title_my_ad_disab... value="%26amp;toolbar.title.? does anyone know how to get rid of this, and My computer wont copy and paste any more.Neither of my laptops will, what did I do wrong %26amp; how can I fix it?

and Can i have more than one browser, like Yahoo %26amp; the new Chrome, at the same time, will i have to change anythi?

What the heck do these questions have to do with hockey? If they are monitoring this stuff they aren't doing a very good job of it. A hockey related question would be something like this one, Who are the Leafs fans going to blame if the Leafs have another lousy season now that Bryan McCabe is gone?

What age should you start playing hockey?

I'm a girl and ive been interested in playing hockey for months now. When is the appropriate age to start playing ? I'm about to be thirteen in like twenty days. Is it to late to start ?|||If you want to make it to the NHL (well, not you because you're a girl :P) it's best to start young, like five.

But if you're just interested in having fun and being competitive, it doesn't matter!|||Whenever but the sooner the better

I started skating at 3 and started a intro team @ 4, and now I played travel aa (before I got hurt) but there is someone who.started when they were 11, and plays on my team and he has scouts looking at him so if you put your best into it you can accomplish anything|||its never to late to start, you could do rec league for a year or go straight to community but just play it for fun doesn't matter if you are bad or really good just go out there and have fun|||I started recently and had fun improved and scored in the last game of the season. try it and don't quit because you are not the best, which you won't be.|||never to late to start ! Im 13 , had my first season this year! I wasn't the best player but I defiantly improved and had lots of fun!|||It is never too late - But unless you know how to skate already I suggest learning

that before anything. It will make it easier + more fun to learn how to play hockey

How good at skating do you need to be to play ice hockey?

I'm a 15 year old girl and I started ice skating lessons late last year and now can skate forwards relatively fast (on figure skates) and backwards very slowly and can sort of do cross-overs. I want to start ice hockey lessons in 2 months or so, so I can play next year, will I be good enough? If not how good do I need to be? I also play normal hockey (field hockey?) are the skills used similar?|||House League/Local League:

FORWARD:

- Skate Forward better than Backwards.

- Be able to raise the puck at least 6 inches.

- Stick-handle fairly well.

- Push the puck while skating.

- No need to worry about body-contact, was removed on for these leagues.

- Crossovers (Ex. Lift leg over planted leg to turn quickly)

DEFENSE:

- Backwards Skating is a must.

- Able to raise the puck 6 inches from the blue line or top of the circles.

- Good back checker (skating back to your end to prevent a scoring opportunity)

Representative League:

FORWARD:

- Skate forward faster than 20/25km/hr.

- Be able to shoot from any point in the oppositions end.

- Take physical contact.

- Good back checking.

- Good stick handling.

- Need to have wrist shot, snap shot, back hand, and slap shot down to a fine art.

- Need to be fit throughout the season.

- Crossovers need to be good both ways (Left/Right)

DEFENSE:

- Backwards skating needs to be almost as good as forward skating.

- Slap shot is needed: Must be able to hit the net at any point in the oppositions end.

- Take physical contact.

- Crossover need to be good both ways (Left/Right) backwards and forwards.

- Need to keep head up at all times.

- Back checking quickly and efficiently

- Passing must be good.|||I would keep practicing. Get hockey skates. They feel different. Strengthen your ankles. Skating is a must for hockey.. duh. You don't want to be skating like you do now. You want to be good and strong at all skills on your skates. Because playing hockey... you will be skating, passing, shooting, getting passes, watching/ starting plays. It isn't the easiest thing to do. The last thing you want to be doing is tripping over your skates. Ice hockey is faster than your "normal" hockey. *Sorry about this next comment*--%26gt; I can't believe you called field hockey NORMAL hockey. That is just plain offensive.

Good Luck! You will need it.|||Depends on the level you're trying to get to. Backwards skating isn't as important for a

forward as for a defenceman or goalie - but you gotta be a good skater in all directions.

Look at videos of field hockey + ice hockey to make the distinction / notice differences

Is it too late for me to start playing hockey?

I'm 18 years old. I'm a big hockey fan and I know all the rules to hockey. I'm a pretty good skater. I'm just looking for any advice anyone has for me ohow to get started playing.|||A good friend of mine started playing hockey around age 20, and has been active on a local team. Check out your local ice rinks to see if they have any lessons, and if they have any teams for beginner adults.|||try stopping by the closet ice rink to see if they have programs for your age grp.|||I'd say find out if there are any local leagues and go try out. Than that will be a good indication of your skills. It's harder than you think.|||It is never too late to start playing a great sport! The world needs more hockey players. Go down to your local rink and ask to speak to the coaches and/or trainers..even the other players. Good luck too!|||its neverrr too late. just get info on joining amature hockey leagues and work your way up. a lot of times hockey starts in like nov or dec, but sometimes places have summer hockey so you should really start checking it out soon.

you just really need to find out the details around where you live.|||you couldnt be to old. i no people who started playing in their 30s and are still playing. i say go for it!|||I didn't start playing hockey until I was around 20 or 21. I didn't learn to skate until 19. I'm now 30 and while I'm not the best skater, I still usually lead whatever team I'm on in scoring.

Find a local rink and join a house team. Or if you don't think you are ready to jump right out into a game, some rinks have weekly hockey clinics to learn the game. If you can already skate well, that's a huge part of starting to play hockey. I started playing hockey about a year or two after learning how to skate. And I didn't skate a lot in that time either.|||No. There are plenty of adults who start playing each year. I started playing when I was 15. I started out somewhat poorly, but I quickly got on track. I've had a ton of fun, and you shouldn't miss out. Since you already can skate, you are already ahead of the pack. Look around at your local rinks and see what programs they have (like summer classes/camps) for beginning players.

Since you already love hockey, it shouldn't be too hard to start. Go to your rink's shop or someplace with a good selection of gear. Get fully outfitted.

I'm guessing you already have some basics down, so here is something that would suit you well:

Find a local rink that offers stick-and-shoot sessions. These are pretty much open skating sessions, but they put out goals and pucks and you can practice shooting, passing, stickhandling, etc.

Since you haven't played before but you can skate and know what you're doing, this is a good way to get familiar with the stick and puck on ice. There is zero pressure, and you don't have to keep up with anyone.

Look around the web for tips. things like shifting your weight when shooting, and stuff like that.

http://www.hockeyplayertips.com is a good website by an amateur player...you can find good tips there (also http://hockeyplayertips.blogspot.com )

Also, you can find great off-ice drills here:

http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahoc鈥?/a>

Formalized instruction is good. There are some fundamentals that aren't readily apparent from watching on TV, but are really helpful. (Like what I said in the 1st paragraph.)

From what you said, you should be able to join an adult league/club team and start playing games this upcoming season. (Lots of rinks have 2 or 3 adult divisions, so you can play at your beginning level without having to waste time learning to skate and the rules of hockey.)

You will be able to get into the swing of things quickly.

I don't know you, so you should use your own judgment about what you want to do. These are some good things I found.

It might actually be easier for you to start now, when you are 18, than it may have been when you were, say...16. There are plenty of Adult Learn-to-play programs (at different levels), but not so many beginner things for teenage kids.

Welcome to the joy of playing hockey.

Have a great time.

How much does it cost to play AAA hockey?

I'd like to try out for a AAA hockey team in Colorado in fall 2009, so I am wondering if my family can afford it- About how much does it cost to play aaa hockey per year, including travel expenses? Please only answers from hockey parents whose kids have played AAA hockey.|||It depends on your program, the cost is different everywhere.

Here are a few things you need to think about.

Tryout Fee

Then if you make the team:

Tournament Fees

Ice time Fees-Practices/Games

Traveling Expenses

Jerseys/Socks

Off-ice Training

I've played girls AAA last year, it's way more in-expensive than the guys b/c we do less travelling but my costs anywhere from 7,000-5,000|||girls hockey lol nuff

How often do hockey players respond to fan mail?

I need to send two letters to different famous people for an English assignment, and I really want to send one to a hockey player because I think that most of them don't receive much fan mail. Is that true? And how often do they respond? Anyone know from experience? And just so you know, my hockey player of choice plays for the Nashville Predators.|||I am an autograph collector and have done hundreds of requests by mail.711 responses by mail for hockey alone and I do all 4 major sports. It basically all depends on the player. Your star players may answer, some may not. Lesser known players should easily return your request. Are you trying to get something besides an autograph from them? If so alot of guys don't have too much time to answer other requests.|||Send during the season.According to Shawn Thornton The Bruins get there mail once a month. In the off season they do not sign as they are not at there place of employment ie the rink.Pre season is good also.Don't send a bunch of items as they will sign nothing thinking your an ebayer making money at there expense. Also Crosby,Ovechkin etc forget it.Myers was R.O.Y last year, forget it.They probably get thousands of requests per month alone.Hope this helps.|||I think they get alot of fan mail, but I doubt you will recieve a reply. I'm not even so sure that the mail is given to them. If you do get a response, you normally get a picture or something that the office sends you, it's rarely if ever something you get directly from the player.|||I sent Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres and Sidney Crosby of the penguins fan mail over a year ago, and they haven't responded yet... But good luck! (:|||Rarely to never.

Maybe your player will write though being as he is on a team in kinda a "non hockey city"|||never and violently; maybe try email

Where can I find a girls hockey league to play in?

I live in Garfield, New Jersey/ Bergen county and I am looking for a girls hockey league to play in. It could be any type of hockey. I am 13 years old. Is there anywhere around this area I could sign up for hockey?|||Contact the Girls/Women's District contact for the Atlantic region of USA Hockey (see link). She can help you find a suitable team.

Are you a beginner? You will probably find it helpful to get some kind of skating lessons or hockey camp over the summer. That may be mostly with boys, but it's helpful to get some experience before the season starts in fall.|||I don't Know were there's any but if u find 1 let me no..i love hockey...i kick *** in floor hockey and now i want to play on ice!!! there's only hockey for guys around me :( but if u find one please let me know and i will gladly do the same for you!|||Have you ever played before or do you want to start and learn how to play?|||^I love that my coach is on there.

Listen to Louise. She knows what she's talking about.

What is the average expense for hockey equipment?

What would be the average expense to get all of the equipment for girls hockey? Not a goalie. What are some brands you recomend?|||Well like said before, depends on the condition (new or used), the brand, the size, where you get it, etc.

But for used probably $200-400 and for new $500-800+.

The brands I recommend are CCM, Easton, Reebok, and Bauer.|||Unless you have stopped growing, buy used. You can get it ultrasonically cleaned.

Bauer, cooper, nike, etc.|||Depends on the quality and also if it's adult or jr size

Brands i recommend: Jofa, Sherwood, Easton, CCM|||your best bet is to get used ,,and asked your sporting goods store for help also

What is difference between lacrosse and hockey equipment bags?

Look to get my brother a lacrosse bag with wheels but there is few to pick from but many hockey bags. Is there a difference between the two because they look really similar.|||Not really any difference. Some hockey bags have special skate holders on the outsides which would be pretty much useless for lacrosse.

Unless there is a certain brand he is looking for (ask him) a hockey bag should do the trick.|||Don't get him a wheel bag I don't think they make them get him a laxpack those are the most common i have one and I love it the diffrence is lax bags are usally smaller and say most say lacrosse on them if it's a warrior bag there is a good chance it's for lacroose|||lacrosse bags tend to be a little bit smaller, and longer to compensate for the fact that guys put their sticks right in the bag. also, they arent made to be that heavy duty. lacrosse is a pretty light sport when it comes to equipment.|||no differance besides the skate holders on the side. also stay away from the wheels, they are pointless for lacrosse for the most part because they dont roll well on grass (i know form experiance)

How should i start to play hockey?

I'm 14 and am interested in playing hockey. I've neer played before and am woungering if I should go for it. Any sugestions?|||Can you skate? If so, you got part of it covered...Check your local rink, they may have some beginner classes to get a hang of it..Ice time is cheaper now with Spring and summer coming up so it's a good time to learn..Equipment is expensive however...Check ebay, a used equipment store, or if you're school has a team they may be able to help you out|||It depends on whatever skills you currently have already. Have you been playing for a while, just not organized games? Do you know how to skate? Can you give and take a hit? Just find the skills that you do not do well in, and maybe look up some techniques online. If you don't know how to skate, you can easily learn how and be pretty descent in about a week. If you roller blade, but don't ice skate, ice skating is just a small step further.|||You have to go to the ice rink near your home and see with the guys who work here what are the conditions to enter first the practice and then the team, if your skilled enough it won't be a problem

from Valenciennes, north of France|||Well, if you can't skate I recommend you enrole in power skating and skate lots. If you can skate still pratice lots. Also enrole into some sort of hockey school. Spend lots of time at an outdoor rink and shoot and stick handle lots.|||Yeah! Just go for it! Hockey is a great game! Just grab a stick and ball and see if you like it. If you do then start playing at a local club!|||just pick up hockey stick and hit the ball ...........its easy na

The price will be the same online and in store or a small difference unless you get it from a non-official seller based in asia or something. It won't be as good as the real ones in that case.|||It is the same price wherever you go and the cheapest i've seen them is 130.00$ Of course you can get them on sale i'm sure.

What kind of hockey stick is good for street hockey?

I am planning to play street hockey (on CEMENT) and wanting to buy a decent stick at a good price.

My question is what kind of a stick is the most DURABLE and LONG LASTING for playing on cement?

Is a wooden stick better or an aluminum stick...please tell me why , thanks :)|||Wooden sticks are used for street not aluminum. Most street leagues actually prohibit aluminum sticks, so your best bet is a wooden stick and preferably a koho if you're just starting out. My first stick was a koho ultimate and it was amazing.|||any wood stick will do just fine, there so cheap now a days its not worth worrying about long lasting or durability since you could go buy a replacement blade for like under 10$|||Buy a Warrior Kronik. Theyre alot better for street hockey, not worth it on ice though.|||A street hockey stick, because that's what they're made for.|||no blade of a stick is aluminum|||find a wood stick with an ABS blade. ABS blades last longer and are designed for street hockey

How would you attract a professional hockey team to Indianapolis?

And by professional, I don't necessarily mean the NHL. Anyone familiar with hockey in Indy knows that we have had several minor league teams over the years, and currently have an amateur junior league team. I'm in favor of getting a pro minor league team back again. How would you make that happen?|||Years ago my grandfather used to own the Checkers and the Racers. He also had the Owls over in Columbus, and the Pittsburgh Penguins for awhile in the late 70's. He never did it for the money. Look at the team we had to field in the NFL to sell out games. Indy is a long way away from supporting Hockey at a profitable level. We are the biggest fair weather fans in the nation. If a local resident loves the game, and has the money to burn. Thats our only chance.|||Coach Scott can be my coach any day. I will skate through a brick wall for beer and sluts.|||I would never have said that Columbus, Ohio would have a pro team before Indianapolis. Nothing against either city, it's just that Indy already has the Pacers and Colts and would seem a likely place for an expansion team.

In lieu of an NHL team I think the AHL should consider placing a team there. The Ice were the last team that I can recall playing there.|||They've had hockey there a few times. It didn't work, I doubt anyone will be dumb enough to try again.|||For starters, don't tell Nelson Scalbania what you have in mind. He might want in on it and you don't want that. Is he even alive still?

I don't get it, hockey should work in Indy, wonder why it never really caught on. Good luck.|||It's a bit of a struggle people think of Indy as a car mecca and when you say hockey they think of a failed WHA franchise that sold Gretzky, kinda hard to live that down even after all this time.|||Put bums in seats for the team you already have.|||With beer and sluts.

How long are hockey practices and games?

My boyfriend has hockey practice and said he would be at my house after and its been two and half hours. How long are hockey practices? How long are games? How often a week do people have games and practices?

Thanks !|||Practices depend on the coach. The practice will last as long as the coach wants them there.

Games take about 2 hours, give or take a bit.|||Games are 3x 20 min + time between the periods that could be up to 15-18 minutes. Then ofc time after the game to change gear and take a shower etc that could take up to 1h or more if they have after-game brief or something.

Practices are usually between 45min - 1hr 30min. And you need to warm up and change gear before and after practices too so it might take up to 2 and half hours easily if they have longer practice.

Amount of games and practices depends on level of play but id say 4 times in a week is pretty much the minimum. Could easily be up to 10 times a week + games at higher level.|||It depends, somedays I have 2 hours pratice, somedays 4 hours -_-, somedays 1 hour, get the point? %26amp; games are around 2 hours.|||30 min. to get dressed. 1:30 hours of actually playing. 15 min. to get undressed. I have hockey 3/4x a week.

What is a high school in Minnesota that has a girls ice hockey team?

I am writing a story and my main character, a girl plays ice hockey. I believe she lives in Minnesota, somewhere up north and that gets cold quick. I feel at her school ice hockey is the main sport and there could be a boys and girl team. Perhaps a high school that doesn't offer football but ice hockey instead. A good pro shop will be able to direct you to a brand that fits your foot--narrow, wide, high arch, etc. Then try them on and see how they feel. I like CCM, my son likes Graf. Each brand has skates at different price points so once you find the best fit, you can find a model at a good price. Don't rule out used skates either. What are some ways i can become a better hockey player?

I'm a decent hockey player at best. I'm probably the worst player on my varsity hockey team. I think my hugest problem is that i'm slow, so can anyone throw out some ideas of how to become a quicker, faster skater? Any other ideas on increasing my skill levels would help also.|||Hockey, hockey, hockey. I am a hockey player too and I have been playing since I was 12, I am 18 now and I am probably one of the worst on the team. I feel I can never catch up. So.. I went to my coaches and approached them and they gave me some pointer. They told me to take longer strides, push back further with my skates, quick steps are only useful for the beginning of your take off. You need to push as hard as you can when taking these long strides, have your skates on the ice as long as you can before you take another. It takes time, but it will help you out. Don't worry, it sounds like you are already on the right track by asking for help. Another thing you can do is to talk to your own coach about it, he wants his or her players to do well, so chances are he or she will jump at the chance to give you some pointers. Good luck.|||well the chick above me is at times correct ok you want to really be fast then this is what you need to do first you need to work out off the ice like alot of sprints and alot of running also for quicker feet use a ladder if you dont know what that is ask your coach. When on the ice try to skate as hard as you can i know it can be hard a times but if you challenge yourself you will see improvements. Remember off ice is a very important factor in your overall performance.

p.s im a semi pro hockey player I know what im talking about|||Sprints...jumps....Do jumps one footed up stairs one at a time then move up to two then three....Speed = explosion. when you weight train explode going up on squats or presses. What is the most reliable hockey equipment?

I still have time to shop but I am going to get my son brand new equipment come next season and i was just wondering what every one's personal oppion is on the more durable ice hockey gear is? What brands tend to last longer? Skates, gloves, pants? Knowledgable sales people should be able to determine what is best, based upon your and your sons current situation!

Also, ask him (assuming he is already a player), he knows what he likes!

I also think you need to see how equipment fits..I have noticed that the same size equipment can vary from company to company... Recently I tried on $500 mission (fuel) skates, and they hurt my feet.. so.. I went with the Bauer Vapor XXV they just felt better, and were almost half the price....

I have Jofa elbow pads, Bauer shins and Shoulders, I use Christian Pants (really like Louisville too but not sure if they make them anymore) My gloves are Christian and my helmet is RBK. I love the helmet, used to use all Bauer stuff but this is the most comfortale helmet I have ever ever worn in my 24 years of playing!! When it comes to skates don't go cheap, unless your son is growing like a weed and wil only be in the skates for half a year. Then I would go with used skates until he slows his growing down or money isn't a big deal.|||I think this is all based on personal experience. I really like CCM for example. just try out different brands and see what you like. Some ppl will say RBK is the best and another guy will be like I had a pair of RBK skates that sucked... you know what I mean. Good luck though...|||Easton is always good and look at Bauer also

How do I prevent wear on my street hockey stick?

I purchased an ice hockey stick for use on pavement. The blade is composite-covered wood. The parking lot is sanding the blade tremendously; is there anything I can do, or should I wait 'til it dies and then buy a street hockey plastic one?

Thanks.|||It's probably damaged beyond repair at this point, so you might as well use it until it breaks or wears down to a toothpick.

How does the minor league hockey system work?

Players get called up from the minor leagues and sent back down just like in baseball. However, some of the minor leagues in hockey are actually considered semi-professional leagues. Were leagues such as the AHL and ECHL established independently of the NHL and they have some sort of transfer agreement for players? How exactly does it work?|||The ECHL, CHL, and AHL are all full professional leagues.

The AHL and NHL were at one time both partners, and adversaries. I played in the AHL because I was the property of the Chicago Black Hawks, but many others played because they were professionals. Teams like the Hershey Bears, Rochester Americans, and the Cleveland Barons, all had NHL size payrolls and went after players as free agents.

In the mid to late 60s, with NHL expansion (especially into CHL and AHL markets), the WHL imploded (another professional league pre-1970) and the AHL and CHL stepped in line as full NHL affiliates due to the loss of the bigger markets (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Buffalo).

Currently, there are 30 NHL teams, and 30 AHL teams. Every AHL team has an agreement with an NHL team to supply at least 86% of their roster (each AHL team is free to sign up to 4 non-NHL affiliated players). The IHL and ECHL have similar, less-binding player agreements.

The NHL has it's own collective bargaining agreement (CBA) which covers all players who have an NHL contract, regardless of which league they are playing in. The AHL has it's own CBA which governs all players in the AHL, that aren't under NHL contracts, and has an AHL/NHL section that governs those players under 2 way contracts (or in the case of Marc Denis, NHL players who suck too much to be in the NHL).

There are currently several cases (Toronto, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit) where the owner of the NHL team has an ownership stake in the AHL team.

Usually, the owners of the AHL team will sign a financial agreement with the NHL team that permits and encourages the AHL team to develop players for the NHL teams.

I guess the answer to your question is that the NHL has NEVER created it's own full-fledged development league. Prior to the 1967 expansion, the NHL competed with several other professional leagues (although the NHL was still regarded as the top dog) and through the last 40 years, these other leagues have consolidated to be the NHL's minor league system|||How does the NHL-AHL-ECHL relationship work? Can the AHL sign their own players and send them to the ECHL, or can the NHL sign and assign players to both leagues?

What measurement should my ice hockey blades be sharpened to?

Taking my ice hockey skates to be sharpened. What length should the cut be? Any recommendations?|||A few factors will determine the best radius to have your skates ground to.

Usually, 7/16 is the radius of choice. However, if the ice you play on is softer than normal, you may need to increase the radius to 1/2 avoid cutting into the ice as much. If you play on a harder ice than normal the opposite is true, you may need to go to a 3/8.

What is your style of play? Do you grind in the corners? Stop and start a lot? You may want to stay with a 7/16. Too much radius, like a 1/2, and you will slide too much on your stops. A sharp radius like a 3/8 and you will dig into the ice too much, and tire easily.

It is mostly personal preference, so I say try a couple of different ones to see what suits you best.

Good luck,

Steve.|||Whatever you like. the smaller the number, the deeper the cut will be and the more the blade will grab. A higher number gives you easier turning but it will be harder to hold your position in a shoving match. 1/2" is a pretty typical number, just go with that.|||HOWEVER YOU WANT

How much does it cost to manufacture a hockey stick?

I was looking for pricing information that involved the production of a hockey stick, or more easily a

"batch" of hockey sticks. For instance, how much labor and materials are expensed in order to Manifacture a couple of sticks. It does not matter if these are wood or composite sticks. Also, a source would be helpful. Thanks!|||probs about a 3rd of the selling price|||Labor and materials are the direct costs. So if your factory is hand carving these sticks any answer you get would be in the right direction eh?

Wood, glue, fiberglass wrap would be your materials. Go to home depot and see how much a piece of lumber costs (2x4's are softwood, a hockey stick needs hardwood), a bottle of glue and maybe some fiberglass wrap for an auto repair store. So the materials cant cost more than this. Now how long will it take you to fashion one?... assume minimum wage in your country and multiply by the number of hours you estimate. for fun try making one yourself.

However there are also tooling costs... what do you need? a carving knife? a jigsaw? a router? glue clamps? Think it through and list the estimated prices. These would be the "capital outlays". Estimate how many hockey sticks you can make with them before they wear out. Divide the total cost by the number of sticks and this is the cost/stick of your tools.

Last you would need a place to work in. If you rent a room to do this work.. what is the cost of the room per month or day and how many sticks can you make during this time? This will be the cost per stick

Add these subtotals together and you are getting close to the worst case cost per stick. Why worst case? Because any professional with a factory will be able to do better than you on costs...

so there you have it... your batch of sticks can't cost more than this.

How does the mens ice hockey comp work? How many groups, who gets to play who in the semi's?

I don't follow ice hockey but want to understand what's happening in the olympics. Who do you think will win%26gt;

What chance is Canada?|||There first is a round robin with 3 groups of 4 teams each. At the end of the round robin every team qualifies for the playoff part, but the top teams get a bye into the semi finals and easier match ups for them.

I think that the 4 teams with the biggest chance of winning would be: Canada, Russia, USA, and Sweden. They all have a good chance, but i would put my money on Russia, as they have a very skilled team and have won the past 2 world championships.

Is it okay to use hockey ice skates to learn skating if we can't find figure skates?

My 7 yr old is learning to ice skate just so he can use it recreationally. I am having a hard time finding figure skates for him. Is it okay to learn on hockey skates? We don't plan on playing hockey. I've heard that once you use hockey skates it's hard to go back to figure skates. Any tips or advise will be appreciated.|||I wouldn't suggest getting him hockey skates. Hockey skates have a different blade and structure. They don't have a toe pick so when he does get figure skates it will be hard for him to get used to them, he'd probably be tripping over the toe pick a lot. I also think the blades are thinner. My little brother would always use figure skates to go ice skating and then one time he had to use hockey skates and he said it was a lot harder to balance because the blade was thinner. Hockey skates are made for hockey so i wouldn't suggest using them for figure skating. If your trying to find them at your pro shop it's going to be hard because they don't sell a lot there. I went there one time looking for figure skates and all they had was some cheap ones and hockey skates. Get his feet measured and look online for figure skates.

I'd suggest the Reidell 21 or the Jackson artiste for beginners|||Hi There,

Figure skate blades are a different shape and they have a toe pick, I think learning from hockey skates can be done but if your planning to get him to wear figure skates in the future it's going to be a very different skating experience and won't be that easy to do, I've been skating for a while with Figure skates and whenever I try to skate with Hockey skates i find it really difficult to do because of the structure of the boot and blade, But if it's just skating for fun then it won't really make much difference as he will then just be skating around like everyone else, but if you would like him to compete then I would keep trying to find figure skates for him. As he is only 7 i would recommend not spending too much money on the figure skates as he will grow very quickly and usually skates are a lot of money. Good Luck, and i hope this helps and everything works out! :) xx|||why are you making a boy do figure skating, thats gay, its a womens sport, put him in hockey, more friends, look at most professional male figure skaters, there homosexual, do you want that for your son. How come hockey coaches get fired so quickly?

I don't know a lot about hockey but I heard that Bob Hartley the coach of the Thrashers got fired SIX games into the season. And this isn't the first time I've heard of a hockey coach getting fired so quickly, so how come it doesn't happen in the other major sports?|||In hockey there are many different types of systems, coverages, defensive, and offensive stratagies that a team can play. Over the years it has been my experience that any of the systems can be effective and produce winning (and championship teams). Example: 70's Habs - Left Wing Lock, 80's Oilers - Run and Gun, 90's Devil's - Trap, 04 Flames - dump and chase, 07 Senator's - overload give and go.

The responsibility of the coach is to pick the best system for the talent avaliable, and get every player to buy into the system (execute), and motivate the team to work hard for the coach and the team. Rarely at the NHL level is there not enough talent to execute and win with the proper system. Remember the Flames under Darryl Sutter - a low talent bunch of over-achivers went to game 7 of the finals using the dump and chase system and litterally out-worked every team they faced (and a hot goaltender). Those players played for their coach.

If a coach implements the wrong systems or cannot motivate the players then he should be replaced and he is to blame for a lot of the trouble. That is why teams normally do not fire all the players, they fire the coach. Teams normally do it quickly at thr request of the players (captains) if they know the team will not play for that coach.|||It is easier to fire the coach than 20 players. You are right other sports tend to wait until the off season while hockey it usually happens during. I think one of the main reasons is that changing the coach seems to work in the short term anyway. The players seem to respond knowing that the next changes will involve them. Coaches sometimes lose the room and the players are waiting for the firing and do put more effort in after a coach has been fired.

Also, it gives the GM some breathing room. I think it becomes, try a new coach before someone decides to try a new general manager.

This makes more sense than New jersey firing the coach with 3 games left.|||He was on the hot seat at the end of last season, but the team's GM decided to take a chance on the guy going into this season.

It quickly became apparent that the players had basically quit on the coach and that things would not be improving if left alone. The GM felt he had to make a decision before it got too late, in hopes of salvaging the season.

With 76 games left, the GM can now try to bring in a new coach that might inject some energy and enthusiasm back to the dressing room.|||because there team lose and bad camps with all there drills|||Well Football you only have 16 regular season games, wouldn't have time to regroup the team. As to baseball I don't know why anyone would want the job in the first place but they wait usually because maybe the team is going to turn around as it is SO long of a season. Hockey though the Coach is usually in trouble from the previous season. You see how the year starts. If the same problems are there you get someone else. Sometimes it is about getting different players to see if that will help. Sometimes it isn't just about coaching styles. I remember Hlinka was fired from the Penguins and part of the reason was that he wasn't putting enough effort into learning English as the team had asked. Anyway the new coach has time to try to fix the problem and the earlier in the season the faster he can put his system in and the team can see if it will work.|||It happens quickly in other sports but to get a better handle on this you need to have a similar frame of reference. For football changes mid stream are hard, the sched is short and a new coach likes to have input on who they have on the lineup and how thay plan to use them in their "schemes" on O or D. For baseball, a long schedule means teams can still turn things around and make the playoffs. Iv'e seen baseball teams go on 20 game winning streaks so they move slower there. For hockey and basketball after 8 games or 10% of the season it may be obvious the club has to shake things up before they get so far behind they can't catch up. In hockey today with the new 3 point possbile per game format, it's hard for teams to make up a ten point difference in the standings than it once was so teams are more apt to make changes if things go south in a hurry. For Hartley, he not only lost 6 games this year but also was swept from the playoffs 4 straight last year so that's 10 straight losses. You can't fire the players when it's quite obvious they are really at fault so you dump the coach and hope that it sends the players a message.|||well they got swept in the playoffs pretty badly last season, they lost 1 of their PLAYOFF games 7-1 thats embarising

What is the best hockey skate out there for someone switching over after 21yrs of using figure skates?

I have decided to switch from figure skates to hockey skates and the bf is VERY supportive but not too helpful. Never used hockey skates before don't really know the difference between all the types... he says Bauer is the best but has also only ever skated w/ hockey skates... What is best for a beginner?|||I'd recommend CCM. I've been using them and they are comfortable. Also, they are made wide. It's a good brand since they both do low-end and high-end gear. If you're a beginner, then you should get a more cheap pair to get you used to the skating (models like the Intruders, etc) then get a better pair once you've mastered it. Bauer is decent, but I don't really like that brand for skates because they are pretty narrow. If you're looking for something more similar to recreational skating, then Reebok is the best brand for that. The boot will be more flexible than hockey skates which are stiffer.|||I think if you want to leave it at hockey skates, you should invest some money in it.

I'm using Nike Bauer Vapor. There are many different in this series but if you go to a hockey shop they'll probably show you the best skates for you.

What type of hockey player would you rather vote for rookie of the year?

Ok the hockey league that Im playing in is having the players vote for rookie of the year, best defenseman, etc, And Im up for rookie of the year, me and two other players. What are the best seats at a hockey arena?

I know nothing about hockey and I'm planning on taking my boyfriend to a hockey game for part of his Valentine's Day present. I was about to buy the tickets online, I realized I have no clue what seats to buy.

It looks like the top would give the best view, probably at one of the ends. But I'm inexperienced, so, asking someone who DOES know which seats to get...

So, what should I get?|||Lower bowl are the most expensive, asides from luxury boxes of course, with prices going down as the levels go up.

The height really isn't too important, the most important thing to get if you can is the middle/center ice area if possible. On the side of the players benches is a plus too but not necessary.

If you can't get the middle, try and get the end where the home team will be shooting twice (periods 1 %26amp; 3)|||Center ice.

I prefer the 2nd bowl from the 1st as it gives you a higher vantage point and a better over all view of the ice. If you are too low you can't get the width of the rink very well. That is the problem with TV coverage.

The end zones were exciting before they put up the netting. You had to be prepared to duck for cover.

The nose bleed seats are far up, but you get a good view of the action on a whole and the people in these seats are more fun and interesting.|||Which team(arena)? At HSBC I prefer the 200's close to center ice.... perfect seats.

If you go to the team or arena's website, most will have a things where you can see the view from any seat in the arena which would be helpful while choosing seats. My personal preference is that you don't go too low(lower than row 10). If you go too low then it is hard to see at the other end of the rink, and if you get seats in a corner, try to get seats where your favorite team shoots twice.

Example- for HSBC Arena in Buffalo http://www.seats3d.com/nhl/buffalo_sabre鈥?/a>|||I've only been to a handful of games but I really liked the middle ice seats... That way no matter what end the play is in you still have an alright vantage point... I think it's largely opinion tho.

Hell, if you're buying your boyfriend hockey tickets he'll be very happy no matter where they are.|||The most important thing is to try to get ones as close to the middle as possible. If you get ones at one end, it becomes very hard to see what's happening at the other end. Lower bowl are generally better than upper bowl, but I find it's usually not worth the price difference.|||My personal favorites are 2nd deck, center ice, first row, across from the benches. For the price of some lower deck seats, I don't think they are worth it compared to upper deck. Just try for center ice whenever you get them.

However, if he's like me... just being there is all that matters. So, if he isn't happy... gimme a call haha.|||Believe me, don't get an end. (There's a mesh net to keep the puck from going into the crowd)

I'd say go center ice, on one of the upper levels, front row.

It may be kinda expensive, but it'll be totally worth it!

Just curious, but what team are going to see???|||Center Ice. Lower bowl is not bad, but that's when you start fanning out the the crappier parts of the ice. I like paying for the cheap ticket to sit center ice higher up to where you can see everything that goes on. I love to see plays develop from there.|||my favorite seats are right above the top of the glass, in the center of the sides. so middle bowl, middle section.|||Sky box sets are the best but they cost a lot more money

Usually high lower bowl sets or low upper bowl sets are also good

I would go with high lower bowl|||Mine are at centre ice, about 10 rows up from the home team's bench.

What are good skates for an ice hockey player who has been playing for about a year?

I have been playing ice hockey and skating for about a year now. I have CCM 92s and I want to get a good pair of skates for my level of ice hockey. My price range is æ‹¢50-æ‹¢75. What is the best hockey stick for a player with a hard shot?

Im planning on buying a hockey stick for my boyfriend for Christmas but I have no idea what kind is good!|||Bauer Total One 100 Flex Kane Curve|||If he has a "hard shot" you want to make sure the sticks flex is high. There really isn't any bad stick, it just depends on the budget you have.

If you can get a look of one of his older sticks that you know he likes, you can check to see if there's grip and what kind of curve it is. Some players like a grip while others don't and every player has a curve they really like.|||It depends on your budget.

What temperature should regulation hockey pucks be stored at?

For my science fair project I decided to see what temperature i should keep hockey pucks at in order to eliminate bounce. I was wondering what temperatures to keep them at just to try. I know it should be cold, but just how cold? I still want them to be safe to play with so its not like playing with a rock, you know? Do you have any suggestions on temperatures to try in degrees Celsius?|||Im gonna say a least 32 degrees

What do most professional hockey players eat before a game?

Food. I know that. Do they have a set kind of food they eat to keep stamina up or is a personal choice? Runners eat pasta, what do hockey players eat? This way out of my realm of thinking.

Extra Inquiry: Who thinks we should get Mike Rowe on the ice to be a practice goalie?|||I hear lots of them eat pasta. In the playoffs during a long overtime, they order pizza and bananas - really high carb and fat to keep them going, I guess. It's weird, I just can't imagine working out so hard you actually need pizza!

Y'meen Dirty Mike Rowe? Could be a sweaty job, not that dirty! Still, hockey and Mike would be a nice combination - about the only two shows I watch combined.|||Pasta and chicken tend to be the staple of most pregame meals, although a lot of guys have their own oddities.

What's the difference between field hockey, roller hockey & ice hockey?

Is it ALL just hockey with a hockey stick, only one uses roller skates, one uses ice skates %26amp; one is on the ground, on a field? And what's the difference between these sports %26amp; lacrosse?

Also, would anyone know where an 8 year old girl can play any of these sports (particularly field hockey or lacrosse) in Suffolk County, New York?

Thanks!|||the differences are that with ice hockey, you are obviously on the ice and you wear a helmet. Also; you have a different shaped stick. Field hockey is on the field/astro turf, you don't need a helmet, but a gumsheild/mouthguard, and the stick is again different. Roller hockey is on roller blades/skates and played with a stick nearer the shape of ice hockey than field.

The field hockey stick is more curved at the end and has a smaller end. Also; ice hockey is played with a puck, whereas field hockey is played with a ball.

a) get an education while playing hockey,

b) have a stable home life while living away from home.

Moving into a house with a smitten puck bunny meets none of these needs.

I sed to live on a street where three Major Junior players were billeted. Will a composite hockey stick be better when playing on the street. Because the road is rough, it scrapes off the wooden blade? I am wondering if a composite stick will be better?|||ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! The very best blades for road hockey are the ones that cost 2 bucks at a Canadian Tire or at any sports store. They are the harden plastic white blades that you can curve by hand. How does minor league hockey affailations work?

How does minor league hockey affailations work? I know the NHL has a deal with the AHL, but can't AHL teams sign and release players independentally as well? And are ECHL teams affailaited with the NHL, AHL, both, or independent? And what about lower level teams and leagues?|||Each NHL hockey team has an affiliate team in the AHL. The NHL may also have affiliate teams in other minor professional leagues such as the ECHL, IHL, and CHL.

The AHL is the most highly-ranked minor league. The ECHL, IHL, and CHL are on the next tier below and act as feeders to the AHL, with the ECHL being the greatest of the three "equals" due to its more official ties to the NHL. The IHL would be considered second to the ECHL and slightly above the CHL due to higher allowance of veteran players and a higher salary cap. The SPHL in turn is a feeder to the ECHL, IHL and CHL. This tier is followed by several lower-grade and semi-pro leagues.

AHL - American Hockey League

CHL - Central Hockey League

IHL - International Hockey League

ECHL - East Coast Hockey League

SPHL - Southern Professional Hockey League

Lower levels of hockey would include the Semi-Pro teams (LCH, PDHL) and Junior Teams. The Junior Teams are seperated into 6 categories, Major Junior, Juinor A, Junior B, Junior C, Junior D, and Junior Development. The most widely known Junior Hockey Leagues include the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL, which are all goverened by the CHL (Canadian Hockey League). Another level of hockey is college hockey, or NCAA hockey.

What is the best type of inline hockey skates for a beginner?

Im intersted in buying inline skates, because i want to learn how to skate, hopefully after learning play some recreational roller hockey. Should I get just the regular roller inline skates, or just go ahead and buy the inline hockey skates?

Do you know any brands that are cheap?

thanks|||Mission is the best in my opinion. The pair that I own was about $200+$300 (I don't remember exactly). I know that is a lot for a beginner. The thing is though, I have had chronic pain in my feet since I started 15 years ago. I have never had a "really good" pair of skates until now. My feet have never hurt in these skates.

I am assuming you are an adult and you don't have to worry about outgrowing a pair of skates. If you have to worry about your feet still growing, you should probably go cheaper. . .

What is the training that a professional hockey player goes through?

I'm doing a school project on hockey players and I tried looking everywhere on their training methods. Try to answers these two questions:

1-What are the number of hours dedicated to off-season training, in season training and pre and post season training?

2-What is the proper weight training, nutrition, stretching agility training, cardio training and rest periods of a profession hockey player?

Thanks so much.|||Here is what I think. Contact a local high school or youth league coach or trainer. If there aren't any near you, e-mail the trainer for your favorite team. I have gotten several letters over the years from the Red Wings trainer(s) when I had questions. Also, ask any players you know.

Off season training is more up to the individual I think. Some work harder than others. It's all about conditioning so I imagine most players try to stay in shape somehow.

How difficult is it to learn how to play ice hockey as an adult?

I am 29 years old and soon to turn 30 and want to start learning how to play ice hockey. I never had ice hockey in my town growing up but always wanted to learn. However, I'm wondering how difficult it is to learn how to skate and some of the basic skills involved in order to play at the recreational level with no prior experience. I was quite athletic and played sports growing up such as basketball, football, baseball, and floor hockey, but have not played organized sports in about 8-10 years. Am I kidding myself trying to learn how to play ice hockey now at 30 years old?? It sure seems like a great hobby to take up.|||As a Hockey Father and long time player I can tell you there are many middle aged and older people learning hockey. There are several steps to take first - learn to skate. This can be done on roller blades or at the rink. See if your local rink has a learn to skate program and enroll. We see retirees learning at our facility. If not, see if during open ice you can skate while holding a chair in front of you - offers the chance to maintain your balance.

If you choose the ice option, get fitted with a good pair of hockey skates, not rentals. There is no greater deterent to skating than trying to learn on ill-fitting skates and killing your feet.

If you opt to learn roller blading, again get your own skates. Once you have the skating basics down, most ice rinks have a basics hockey program. We have one for adults at our facility that starts with the basics; skate stops, turning, skating backwards and then progresses through stick handling, shooting and advanced skills.

Whatever method you choose, when you start wear a helmet, wrist, elbow and knee guards to protect yourself. We have in Chicago a well known financial king that learned to skate and play hockey when he turned 50 - Sam Zell. Also, most over 30 adult leagues are non-checking leagues to protect the players. Ask your rink about Rat Hockey nights as well.|||it takes a while before you can even consider playing competitively, maybe 2 to 3 years

|||Your never too old man, I know a guy that's 50 who still plays.|||OH NOT THAT HARD.GO TO A LOCAL RINK AND TAKE SKATING LESSONS- SIMPLE. THEN GO TO THE OPEN HOCKEY SESSION OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND GO OVER THE BASICS. YOU WILL PICK IT UP EVENTUALLY.

p.s. dont try a slapshot when you first learning how to skate,,you will end up on your back ,and believe me it takes your breath away and while trying to get air you wont be able to move and the ice will chill you to the bone.lol.|||I started a month ago, and I'm 19. The whole "you have to play as a kid" thing is bogus. I don't know, I learned how to skate a month ago and I am now on one of the intramural teams here at St. Cloud State (huge hockey school). The stick handling and puck control is a lot harder to master than the skating. At your age though, I don't think anyone will be 'too' serious, so just get out there and have some fun.

I remember how scared I was to start. Haha.

It's a lot of fun.

I've been told several times that my progress has been a lot faster than most anyone though. I was.. "born to play". Haha.

If you have any questions, I can help you out. All the stuff I had to learn is fresh in my mind. Learning to stop was a monster (on one foot anyway).

P.S. Air out your equipment.|||To answer how difficult it is to learn how to play...it's not very difficult at all. What's difficult is learning how to play well. From your description you have a lot of experience in sports so I am sure that the coordination and basic instinct are all there when it comes to playing the game. The hardest part as many people mention, is the skating. If you are a strong minded, fearless person, learning skating will come a lot faster. As an adult it is a lot harder to learn how to skate properly and develop the proper muscle memory than it would if you were 5.

However hockey has a huge advantage on other sports in that it must mostly be played at an ice rink (unless you live in a cold weather state and can play outside which won't be possible for a long time now) so everything is organized. (public skating, pick up hockey) If I wanted to start playing football or baseball as an adult, it would be 100 times more difficult to learn and practice in a game setting.

30 years old is not too old at all. There are people that start a lot later than that. Just try not to get discouraged at pick up hockey games when there are 12 year olds skating circles around you. It happens to everyone just starting out. Better "late" than never.|||It is fun to play but you must do all you can to learn to skate. Not just forward but backwards and be able to move side to side. That's the first thing to do. Get out on the ice and find out for yourself.

You must also be in good physical condition cause it takes alot out of you. It is great fun though.|||You could play, but you're gonna be a shooter tutor out there till ya get good. Just try to learn at public sessions at rinks, don't ever go out into a real game till you get good, you're just gonna get chirped by everyone. But its a great sport I say go for it.|||I started with roller at 29, moved to Ice at 31, and have been playing for several years.

If you are really interested I would say go for it. It is very good exercise and good stress reliever.

You may want to start with adult pickup before joining a league. Most rinks will have adult pickup several times a week and many of the players there will give you good pointers during the game. And some of these guys may be older than 60, I kid you not.|||I am only 18 but this past winter I played on a men's league team with my father who is 43 and guys his age and older ....most of the team had never skated before in their lives let alone play in an organized hockey game... by the end of the season you could still pick out the guys that were new at it but they had improved greatly...especially one guy because he would go skating every chance he could just to get his skating skills up... u can practice the stickhandling, passing and shooting off the ice ...in fact roller hockey players or even floor hockey players usually have exceptional stickhandling and puckhandling skills on the ice because there is less friction on the ice..... so to sum all of that up its not hard you just need to be devoted and practice|||Just get out on some ice, the skating part will take you some time but you will catch on. Im hoping you know the rules from watching hockey. Practice, practice, practice. Hockey is great to play and its a great workout as well as a lot of fun. Go for it!

How much would it be for me to start playing hockey?

I am of course a fan of the NHL, and specifically the Red Wings. It has just occured to me how much I hate myself for not starting to play hockey at a younger age. I am 15, 6 feet tall, probably 150 pounds, and wear size 11 shoes.

If I were to buy used equipment, how would I go about this? And by hockey, I mean Ice Hockey. And how would I practice and train? Would I have to start with ground hockey?|||Look for a play it again sports in your area. I started playing when I was 13 and I had a helmet plus a pair of skates that my dad didn't use anymore and all the equipment cost me about $500. Factoring in the skates and helmet that price would have risen to about $750 - 800. Next once you have your equipment you need to get ice time, its probably too late for you to join a winter team, so you'll need to look into power skating classes, which in my area will run you about $300 at least. Also look into local community centers or skating rinks and go to their fun skates, you can learn the basics of skating there and fun/family skate should run you $3 - 5 for a couple of hours. Also once you've learned to skate you can always go to shinnies at local rinks to play a game for an hour or two, these usually cost between $5 and 15 dollars depending on the amount of ice time.

I think it goes without saying that if you know people with old equipment try to buy/borrow their stuff for cheap because hockey is a very expensive sport. Also maybe try to find some figure skating classes for beginners you can join, I know it sounds lame... But in all seriousness it will be much cheaper to learn how to skate with figure skating classes (all you typically need is the skates and maybe a helmet) and you'll learn faster to skate through figure skating.

Anyways all in all equipment id say about $700 - 800 and to learn to skate will be an ongoing battle...

ANOTHER thing to remember when you are buying skates, not only ask for help to make sure they fit, but also make sure the boot stiffness matches your weight/skill level. I have made the mistake of buying expensive skates just because they were expensive in the past and I suffered. As opposed to when I bought my current skates which were less expensive, but the boot flexibility is perfect for me, my skating was instantly better and the new skates didn't take as long to break in (all natural no bake) nor do they constantly hurt as badly.
