I want to start a field hockey team because I've wanted to play for a while now, but I don't know how to play. Do I need to know how to play to start a team, and what are some good ways to teach myself the rules and techniques?|||Step 1: Go buy a skirt.

What parts of the US is hockey most popular?
I hear the parts of the US where hockey is most popular is in the northern most states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York. No need to mention Canada and other countries since it is much more popular there than it is here. Canada invented hockey after all. Is hockey criticized in the US because of expenses to train its players, and due to fighting?|||Minnesota, Illinois and the northern east coast|||hockey is most popular in the south. the northerners are just to snotty to give hockey a chance, its sad really. canada doesnt accept hockey either, i mean the ottawa senators went bankrupt, the winnipeg jets had to move to phoenix because they werent supported, the quebec nordiques had to move to colorado because they weren't supported.|||Massasoit and the other northern stats but also teams like carolina are big to|||North...Minnesota and Michigan the most|||Michigan.|||in the parts where it's marketed

What is with all the ridiculous questions in the Hockey section?
For every one hockey question, there has to be at least a dozen useless question that have nothing to do with hockey. Doesn't Y/A monitor this stuff?|||I can see what you mean about useless non hockey related questions being in the hockey section. I came across five and climbing, of them in the past few minutes. Like this one Solve for x: abs(3x+5) - abs(2x-1) %26lt; 5?, u may use graphing. Or this one Heal Through Holy Quran ( Heal your body, mind %26amp; spirit ) Get solutions to your problems through holy Quran.? Or this one Should mobile phones be allowed to students in schools %26amp; colleges?Or this one Why aged people in our country are not being cared %26amp; respected by immediate family.? And this one CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO COPY %26amp; PASTE BANNERS? And yet another one More Info about Engr. What age should you start playing hockey?
I'm a girl and ive been interested in playing hockey for months now. When is the appropriate age to start playing ? I'm about to be thirteen in like twenty days. Is it to late to start ?|||If you want to make it to the NHL (well, not you because you're a girl :P) it's best to start young, like five.
But if you're just interested in having fun and being competitive, it doesn't matter!|||Whenever but the sooner the better
I started skating at 3 and started a intro team @ 4, and now I played travel aa (before I got hurt) but there is someone who.started when they were 11, and plays on my team and he has scouts looking at him so if you put your best into it you can accomplish anything|||its never to late to start, you could do rec league for a year or go straight to community but just play it for fun doesn't matter if you are bad or really good just go out there and have fun|||I started recently and had fun improved and scored in the last game of the season. try it and don't quit because you are not the best, which you won't be.|||never to late to start ! Im 13 , had my first season this year! I wasn't the best player but I defiantly improved and had lots of fun!|||It is never too late - But unless you know how to skate already I suggest learning

How good at skating do you need to be to play ice hockey?
I'm a 15 year old girl and I started ice skating lessons late last year and now can skate forwards relatively fast (on figure skates) and backwards very slowly and can sort of do cross-overs. I want to start ice hockey lessons in 2 months or so, so I can play next year, will I be good enough? If not how good do I need to be? I also play normal hockey (field hockey?) are the skills used similar?|||House League/Local League:
FORWARD:
- Skate Forward better than Backwards.
- Be able to raise the puck at least 6 inches.
- Stick-handle fairly well.
- Push the puck while skating.
- No need to worry about body-contact, was removed on for these leagues.
- Crossovers (Ex. Lift leg over planted leg to turn quickly)
DEFENSE:
- Backwards Skating is a must.
- Able to raise the puck 6 inches from the blue line or top of the circles.
- Good back checker (skating back to your end to prevent a scoring opportunity)
Representative League:
FORWARD:
- Skate forward faster than 20/25km/hr.
- Be able to shoot from any point in the oppositions end.
- Take physical contact.
- Good back checking.
- Good stick handling.
- Need to have wrist shot, snap shot, back hand, and slap shot down to a fine art.
- Need to be fit throughout the season.
- Crossovers need to be good both ways (Left/Right)
DEFENSE:
- Backwards skating needs to be almost as good as forward skating.
- Slap shot is needed: Must be able to hit the net at any point in the oppositions end.
- Take physical contact.
- Crossover need to be good both ways (Left/Right) backwards and forwards.
- Need to keep head up at all times.
- Back checking quickly and efficiently
- Passing must be good.|||I would keep practicing. Get hockey skates. They feel different. Strengthen your ankles. Skating is a must for hockey.. duh. You don't want to be skating like you do now. You want to be good and strong at all skills on your skates. Because playing hockey... you will be skating, passing, shooting, getting passes, watching/ starting plays. It isn't the easiest thing to do. The last thing you want to be doing is tripping over your skates. Ice hockey is faster than your "normal" hockey. *Sorry about this next comment*--%26gt; I can't believe you called field hockey NORMAL hockey. That is just plain offensive.

Is it too late for me to start playing hockey?
I'm 18 years old. I'm a big hockey fan and I know all the rules to hockey. I'm a pretty good skater. I'm just looking for any advice anyone has for me ohow to get started playing.|||A good friend of mine started playing hockey around age 20, and has been active on a local team. Check out your local ice rinks to see if they have any lessons, and if they have any teams for beginner adults.|||try stopping by the closet ice rink to see if they have programs for your age grp.|||I'd say find out if there are any local leagues and go try out. Than that will be a good indication of your skills. It's harder than you think.|||It is never too late to start playing a great sport! The world needs more hockey players. Go down to your local rink and ask to speak to the coaches and/or trainers..even the other players. Good luck too!|||its neverrr too late. just get info on joining amature hockey leagues and work your way up. a lot of times hockey starts in like nov or dec, but sometimes places have summer hockey so you should really start checking it out soon.

If you can already skate well, that's a huge part of starting to play hockey. I started playing hockey about a year or two after learning how to skate. And I didn't skate a lot in that time either.|||No. There are plenty of adults who start playing each year. I started playing when I was 15. I started out somewhat poorly, but I quickly got on track. I've had a ton of fun, and you shouldn't miss out. Since you already can skate, you are already ahead of the pack. Look around at your local rinks and see what programs they have (like summer classes/camps) for beginning players.
Since you already love hockey, it shouldn't be too hard to start. Go to your rink's shop or someplace with a good selection of gear. Get fully outfitted.
I'm guessing you already have some basics down, so here is something that would suit you well:
Find a local rink that offers stick-and-shoot sessions. These are pretty much open skating sessions, but they put out goals and pucks and you can practice shooting, passing, stickhandling, etc.
Since you haven't played before but you can skate and know what you're doing, this is a good way to get familiar with the stick and puck on ice. There is zero pressure, and you don't have to keep up with anyone.
Look around the web for tips. things like shifting your weight when shooting, and stuff like that.

From what you said, you should be able to join an adult league/club team and start playing games this upcoming season. (Lots of rinks have 2 or 3 adult divisions, so you can play at your beginning level without having to waste time learning to skate and the rules of hockey.)
You will be able to get into the swing of things quickly.
I don't know you, so you should use your own judgment about what you want to do. These are some good things I found.
It might actually be easier for you to start now, when you are 18, than it may have been when you were, say...16. There are plenty of Adult Learn-to-play programs (at different levels), but not so many beginner things for teenage kids.

How much does it cost to play AAA hockey?
I'd like to try out for a AAA hockey team in Colorado in fall 2009, so I am wondering if my family can afford it- About how much does it cost to play aaa hockey per year, including travel expenses? Please only answers from hockey parents whose kids have played AAA hockey.|||It depends on your program, the cost is different everywhere.
